Despite increasing investor pressure, Qualcomm Inc.'s (NASDAQ:QCOM) Executive Chairman Paul Jacobs announced that the company does not plan to spin-off its chip business.
At an American Chamber of Commerce event in Seoul, Mr. Jacobs told media: "We've had that discussion for a long time, many years the board has looked at it but we still think the synergies of having the businesses together outweighs the dissynergies," adding that since the company is continuously evaluating its options, and their position could change in the future.
The pressure from activist investors and other investors is often evident when there are doubts about a company's operations. In the case of Qualcomm, the firm has had long-time troubles with its chip business. It all started with the antitrust probe in China, when the successful chip business was jeopardized due to the legal issues. Integrated Circuits and Software unit of the company is the major revenue generating division. In the recent quarter it generated around 65% of the total revenue, while the rest came from technology licensing.
Back in April, hedge fund Jana Partners (one of Qualcomm’s largest shareholders with a $2 billion share), asked the chipmaker to contemplate spinning off its chip business from its patent-licensing business, which currently accounts for majority of the chipmaker’s profit, an idea which Qualcomm itself proposed 15 years ago but later dropped.
At the time, sources cited by ZDnet, said that the Qualcomm executives and Jana had, what could be labeled as "constructive" talks, on this matter since late last year.
Qualcomm is one of the world’s largest mobile phone chipset manufacturer. The company also earns a portion of its income through its patent-licensing deals. However, the company’s stock price has been gradually decreasing over the past year, as a result of the increase in competition and the move by partnering companies, like Samsung Electronics (OTCMKTS:SSNLF) to internally developed processors.
