The commercial drive for low-cost, compact, and long battery life handsets, along with the requirements for multiband (for internetwork roaming), multislot EDGE (for higher data rates) functionality, has motivated significant advances in the GSM radio subsystem, including its antenna and IC constituents. In addition to technical performance margins against regulatory standards for high production yields and base station/mobile device link quality, key drivers in this RF technology evolution have mainly been: (1) low cost, (2) increasing levels of integration towards reduced component count and PCB area utilization, and (3) low power consumption.
