Any ideas about optical communicaiton

Hi all,
  Sorry for being not able to type in Chinese in the company...
  Is there anybody that is familiar with optical communication circuit design? Recently I am about to pursue a PhD in this area but have not much experience on it. Can anybody say something about the design challenge, the possible market and the future development? Thanks in advance~
