Wi-Fi sales up, but ASPs shaky

by Rick Merritt

Global sales of Wi-Fi routers, access points and gateways exceeded 18 million units in the second quarter 2010, up six percent over the first three months of the year, according to a new report from ABI Research. However, average selling prices are falling despite the fact the product mix is shifting toward the new 802.11n standard.

“In both consumer and enterprise sectors, demand for 802.11n product is growing rapidly [and] in the second quarter, 802.11n products were the key drivers of Wi-Fi equipment market growth,” said ABI research director Philip Solis.

A total of 5.9 million of 802.11n devices were shipped in the second quarter, up 15 percent over the prior three months. ABI expects the shift to 802.11n products will accelerate.

Despite the six percent unit growth and a heavier mix of high-end products, Wi-Fi equipment revenue rose just five percent in the second quarter as average selling prices dropped about one percent. “Due to increasing competition, the average selling price of these devices is expected to fall still further,” said research associate Khin Sandi Lynn.

Among Wi-Fi vendors, D-Link leads in the consumer and small business market with a 19 percent share, followed by Netgear and Linksys. Cisco Systems leads in the enterprise market segment with a 54 percent share, followed by Aruba Networks at 13 percent, according to ABI's wireless service.
