General Description

In this example the simulation of a lossy loaded waveguide is presented. The waveguide structure consists of a small triangle and an ending brick, both defined as lossy materials to enable the field damping.

Concerning the fundamental waveguide mode the structure should offer a small broadband reflection parameter. The resulting energy losses are visualized with help of a 3D power loss monitor.

Structure Generation

The general settings concerning the PEC boundary and background material as well as the units are given by choosing the appropriate waveguide template. The structure itself is constructed as solid shapes, together with the definition of a curve and its extrude facility defining the triangle shape. Using the local coordinate system offers the possibility to create the different parts relative to each other.

Solver Setup

At the end of the given structure a waveguide port is defined to perform the S-parameter calculation. The excitation signal is a Gaussian shaped pulse referring to the frequency range from 80 to 120 GHz.

In order to get an additional visualization of the field distribution especially of the power loss density, some 3D field monitors are defined at an operation frequency of 100 GHz.

Post Processing

The resulting time signals and the corresponding reflection parameter of the transient calculation are listed in the navigation tree in the folder 1D Results. Obviously the model provides a reflection value of less than -20 dB nearly over the complete frequency range.

The results of the 3D fields can be found in the folder 2D/3D Results, e.g. the power loss density monitor visualizes the regions of high absorption inside the lossy materials.
