SAR Head & Hand - Mobile Phone Calculation - CST2013 MWS Examples

General Description

 

This example contains a typical setup for a complete dual-band mobile phone system simulation including a SAR evaluation (SAR = Specific Absorption Rate). It includes the SAM phantom head and the impact of a hand model (SAM = Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin). The liquid of the head phantom is defined as a broadband frequency-dependent material matching the required material properties at all frequencies of interest. A broadband matching network is added to the structure in CST DESIGN STUDIO.

 

Results of the simulation are return loss (matched and unmatched), far-fields, E-field near-fields and SAR for both frequency bands - 0.9 and 1.8 GHz. All results are obtained by one single simulation run.

 

Structure Generation

 

The complete mobile phone, the SAM phantom head and the hand model are imported as CAD files. Both the hand and head models can be taken from the examples model path for own simulations (hand_1.sat, SAM_1.sat). The boundary conditions are open (add space). The material properties of the fluid (brain) are defined by a tabulated dispersive material as follows.

 

Solver Setup

 

For the excitation a discrete face port (50 Ohm) is defined; the frequency range is between 0 - 2.5 GHz. Field monitors are defined at 0.9 and 1.8 GHz.

 

Post Processing

 

For calculating the SAR maximum values and the 3D distributions two post-processing templates for both relevant frequencies have been defined. They are executed immediately after the simulation is finished. The resulting SAR distribution as well as the near-fields can be found in the 2D/3D Results folder in the navigation tree. The time signals and the return loss can be accessed through the 1D Results, the farfields in folder Farfields.

A broadband matching network is afterwards applied in CST DESIGN STUDIO in order to reduce the reflections at the frequency bands.
